I’ve been using my Zoleo Satellite Communicator for a couple of years now and, whilst I only use a fraction of its features, it gives both Amanda and I piece of mind while the other is travelling in remote areas.
For others, I’m sure the other features of the Zoleo would come in handy such as the check in button or that you can share your location. To me though, the simple fact that we can use the Zoleo app on our phones to message each other or check on the weather makes it worthwhile.
Up until recently I had been back working as a park ranger at Watarrka (Kings Canyon) National Park in the Red Centre. No matter which direction I had to hike or travel in the area phone comms are almost non-existent.
I’d take the Zoleo with me and Amanda knew that if I had issues I could let her know and she wouldn’t have to worry while I was travelling. Likewise, Amanda would often drive south or be working as an archaeologist in some remote area and we could chat via message and I’d know everything was ok.
More recently Amanda has ben working in remote areas in western NSW and has been able to keep in contact with her office and, importantly, provide direction for other staff working in other areas. This has been invaluable to her and her role within the company she works for.
Features
We have barely touched on the different features of the Zoleo but I guess, importantly, we know what else the device can do if needed.
So, for those that haven’t seen our previous post, what are the features of the Zoleo Satellite Communicator?
- Message anywhere over satellite, mobile network and Wi-Fi.
- Weather updates.
- SOS Button. If something goes wrong, and you need assistance, pushing that SOS button means you can get help. Your SOS and GPS coordinates will be sent to our 24/7 emergency response coordination partner and you’ll get confirmation that your alert was received. You can even cancel the alert if it was a false alarm.
- Check-in Button. You can check in with a one button press to let others know you’re OK. Your check-in message is sent to your check-in contact(s) which you set up when activating the device. You can also include your GPS coordinates if desired.
- The ZOLEO App can receive real-time progress updates and exchange messages with the response coordination partner until help arrives.
- Medical Assist, 24/7 access to non-emergency medical advice
- Location Share+ (this is an add-on subscription feature) Location Share+ enables ZOLEO users to share their location with their check-in contacts, on a user-selected interval from every 6 minutes to 4 hours. ZOLEO users and check-in recipients will be able to use the free ZOLEO app to view the current location and breadcrumb trail on a map.
- ZOLEO users can start/stop location sharing any time, and also download maps for use offline. Location Share+ is an optional add-on subscription* that includes unlimited location share messages!
